Stories Linked to Maha Shivratri

There are multiple stories in the Holy Scriptures that are linked to Maha Shivratri. The most famous one describes Maha Shivratri as the occasion when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati after She performed an extremely tough ‘Tapasya’ that spanned for thousands of years aimed at pleasing Lord Shiva to marry Her.

The feminine form of the Almighty is Goddess Adi Shakti who incarnated as Goddess Parvati. From her childhood upon receiving instructions from Divine Sage Narad who was Her Guru, Goddess Parvati started worshipping Lord Shiva and performed such difficult penance that nobody could ever imagine.

While performing Her penance or Tapasya She ate minimally and gradually started to survive only on leaves. Soon, She even quit eating leaves which is why one of Her many names is ‘Aparna’. Going further, She survived only on water and finally She even quit water and survived only on air. This Tapasya of Goddess Parvati went on for thousands of years and finally Lord Shiva appeared and blessed Her to become His wife.

It was Maha Shivratri when the marriage of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati took place and the whole creation rejoiced as finally ‘Shiva & Shakti’ were united.

There is another story that tells us about a critical event that took place when the ‘Devas’ (Gods) and ‘Asuras’ (Demons) churned the ‘Celestial Ocean’ to extract ‘Amrit’ (Elixir of Immortality). Soon after the Gods and Demons started churning the Celestial Ocean, a large amount of highly lethal & deadly poison came out.

Immediately everyone got worried as that poison threatened the very existence of all forms of lives in the world. So, the Gods and the Demons together prayed to Lord Shiva and asked Him to save everyone from that deadly poison. Lord Shiva out of His unfathomable love & compassion for all the beings of the Creation, appeared and drank all that lethal poison.

Lord Shiva held that poison in the pit of His throat and as a result His throat turned blue. It was Maha Shivratri when all that happened and from that day onwards one more name got added to the many names of Lord Shiva. His devotees started calling & worshipping Him as ‘Neel Kanth’ (The One with the Blue Throat).
