According to the Hindu calendar, the fast of Indira Ekadashi 2022 will be observed on September 21, Wednesday. The day of Indira ekadashi has special significance in Hinduism. It is believed that by performing Lord Vishnu puja on this day, one may get all his/her wishes fulfilled.

What is prohibited on Indira Ekadashi?
One should avoid consuming any kind of tamasik food on the day of Ekadashi. One should stay away from indulging in luxuries and comforts too much. Brahmacharya should be followed on the day of Ekadashi. Keep in mind that on this day one should not sweep the house nor do any work like cutting hair, beard, and nails. On the day of Ekadashi, one should observe silence (maun vrata) as much as possible. On this day one should restrain from saying lies, slandering, stealing and staying angry.
Importance of Indira Ekadashi 2022
Indira Ekadashi holds a special significance in all the Ekadashis in Hindu religion. There is a lot of importance attached for it falling in the Pitru Paksha. The days of Pitru paksha are known to pacify the souls of our ancestors. Thus, Shradh Ekadashi is one of the special days.

The ancient texts say that the vrat katha of Indira ekadashi was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtira in Mahabharta. Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha 2022
Indira ekadashi vrat katha can be traced back to Sat Yuga. There was a king named Indrasen. The king was extremely wise, courageous and affluent. He used to worship Lord Vishnu with full devotions. One day, Narad Muni came to his court and asked if the king was fine? The king was little amazed at this sudden visit just to enquire his health. He asked the purpose of coming curiously. Then, Narad Muni answered that he went to Yamloka, where he met the king’s father. The father had asked Maharishi Narad to convey a message which he sent from the Yamloka.
The message was that his father was living in miserable conditions in Yamloka for his past sins and bad deeds. He asked the king to observe the fast of Indira Ekadashi as falling during Pitru paksha in the Ashwin month.
He further said that this will help him get salvation and he will be able to leave the present miserable state. The King agreed and strongly determined to observe fast. He asked Narad Muni about the process of observing fast, so that he can help his father get rid of the past sins.
He humbly asked Narad Muni to narrate the procedure keeping the fast. Then, Maharishi Narad told him the whole procedure. The king has to wake up early in the morning at the Dashmi tithi and take a bath and wear clean clothes. After that, take a dip in Holy River in the afternoon. After that, trapan and shraadh of forefathers should be done. The king should eat only once in the whole day.
On Ekadashi tithi, he should wake up early and take sankalpa of the Indira Ekadashi Vrat 2022. The king should follow all the rituals with full devotions and don’t sleep at night. He should worship and chant Vishnu mantra. The king followed the instructions and his father got liberated.
Indira Ekadashi 2022 puja vidhi
- On the day of the Indira Ekadashi, the observer performs tarpan and shradh of the ancestors.
- The devotee worships Lord Vishnu with full devotion on this day. Lord Vishnu puja is performed. The worshipper offers fruits, flowers, tulsi leaves, sweets and sandalwood to the Lord. It is required to visit the temple of Lord Vishnu this day.
- The vrat starts from the Dashami tithi only. It is a day before the Ekadashi tithi. The devotee performs shradh and pay homage to the ancestors. The observer should eat before sunrise as a strict fast is to be followed on Ekadashi day.
- The fast starts at the sunrise and ends on the next day i.e. on Dwadashi tithi, after performing Lord Vishnu puja. The devotee should first offer food to the cows and the Brahmins before taking meals themselves.
- The devotees listen to the Ekadashi vrat katha on the day of fast. They chant mantras and listen to the Bhajans of Lord Vishnu. The best astrologer also suggests reading the Vishnu Sahastranaam on this day.
