Pakshaghata (Hemiplagia) is a major disabling disease, Ancient Indian classics describe it as a Vata-vikara that is always very difficult to treat because of dominance of Vata among the ‘Tridosha’. There are plenty of diseases that cause sensory or motor function disturbance causing disability. Ayurveda classifies these all diseases in Vata-disorders.

The success rate of curing the disease Pakshaghata is very high in Ayurveda in comparison to modern science except the acute conditions and surgical requirements. Realizing the severity of the disease it was decided to evaluate the horoscopes of the patients of Pakshaghata along with Ayurvedic drug administration plan.

Astrology and Ayurveda are closely related and interlinked to each other. Ayurveda and astrology have constituted a way of life in India. Astrological guidance was sought for all day to day work, including the collection of the herbs, drug administration etc. In astrological classics only Ayurvedic standard terminology has been used regarding the description of the diseases viz-Vata, Pitta and Kapha and Ayurvedic specific name of the disease, which are very easy to understand for Ayurvedic scholar but difficult for modern system’s experts.

Considering all positive factors regarding the Ayurveda and Astrology (combinedly known as ‘Medical- astrology’) and the severity of the disease Pakshghata, the research project was selected. Probably this is first attempt made in the higher education and research stream. The present astromedical study was worked out with following three objectives.

  • To analyze the planetary positions for Pakshaghata in the horoscope of the patients.

  • To draw a hypothetical astromedical etiopathogenesis of Pakshaghata.

  • To establish the co-relation of Ayurveda with astrology on the scientific basis

Materials & Methods : The following material and methods were used in present research work :

Selection of the patient : 10 cases suffering from Pakshaghata (Paralysis) were selected from O.P.D. and I. P.O. wing of National Institute of Ayurveda Jaipur as well as S.M.S. Hospital, Jaipur on the basis of a specific performa prepared.

Inclusion criteria : According to this following correct information was collected.

1. Exact time of birth

2. Date of birth

3. Place of birth

All the patients were analysed with detailed Astro-medical history viz. Major Period, Sub Period, Sub-Sub Period, position of the 6th lord and its relations, benefic and malefic planets, birth signs, constellations etc.

Exclusion Criteria : The patient not having exact horoscopes, were excluded from the trial and the patient who had no signs and symptoms according to clinical inclusion criteria were also excluded.

Criteria of Assessment : The horoscope of the patients were analyzed according to the specific performa prepared.

General Observations : After interviewing and confirming the exact horoscope of the patient registered under the present trial with history of past and present illness, ascendant and planetary position, Navamansha, Dreshkana, History of Astro-medical treatment, signology and other relevant information were worked out.

Observations & Results : Various observations made according to the horoscopes of ten patients registered under the trial generally as well as individually. The following observations & results have been recorded.

Lagna (Ascendant) is occupied by two malefics, the Badhakesh Sun is in its debilitated condition with 12th lord Mercury. Both are aspected by Mars and Ketu. The lord of ascendant Venus is situated in 2nd house and aspected by malefic Saturn and 6th lord Jupiter. The 6th lord is also aspecting the Moon.

• Badhakesha Lagnastha Sun + 12th lord Mercury and Rahu are jointly aspecting sign Aries that is also surrounded by malefics Mars, Saturn and 6th lord Jupiter (Papakartari yoga).

• Aries lord Mars is also forming 6th -8th relation with Sun, Mercury and Rahu being 12th from sign Aries. Being second lord, Mars is situated in 6th house. The significator C.N.S. Mercury and Saturn both are under malefic influence.

•In Navamansha, lord of Ascendant and 8th house, is conjugated with malefic Saturn and aspected by Ketu in first house. The Sun is situated in 12th surrounded by malefics. The sixth lord Jupiter is situated in 8th aspecting the 12th and 2nd house. Mercury is also conjugated with Rahu and Mars and aspected by Ketu. Sign Aries is also aspected by Rahu and Saturn, Aries lord is also accompanied with malefic Rahu and Mercury aspected by Ketu. Moon the 6th lord posited in 6th is also aspected by Sun and Mars.

• On 20/21/22 Sept., 1958 this patient had a paralytic attack in Major period of Rahu with Sup-Period of Saturn and Sub-Sub-Period of Mars. Because of above mentioned malefic planetary positions. The patient got improvement in Sub-Period of Mercury being a 9th lord.

• The main causes of Pakshaghata in this horoscope are

• Affliction of Lagna & Lagnesh

• Affliction of Lord of Aries.

• Affliction of Mercury.

• Malefic situation of Mars and Saturn.

• Kroor Shartyansha ‘Davagni

Case No. 2

• Lord of Ascendant Saturn is afflicted by Rahu and Ketu.

• The Sign, significator for head, the Aries is most affected by the lord of sixth Mercury and eighth Sun.

• Aries is also occupied by Mars in Navamansh with the worst malefic aspect of Saturn and Ketu.

• Mercury is combusted and afflicted in both Lagna & Navamansha without any kind of support.

• Mars and Saturn are exchanging each others' house.

• Kroora Shastyansha namely ‘Yama’

• Saturn is situated in Badhkashthan with Ketu and Badhakesha Mars occupies the 2nd House.

• Saturn + Ketu are forming Shadastaka Yoga with Sun + Mercury + Aries.

• The Sub-Period of Ketu in Major Period of Rahu was from 6-1-94 to 25-01-95. As discussed Rahu & Ketu are causing damage to health affecting the Lagna lord. Major period of Rahu also didn’t give the good health.

• During the Sub-Sub-Period of Ketu in Sub-Period of Ketu on 23rd July 1994 at 9 p.m. the patient had a cerebral vascular accident (Brain hemorrhage) under the above planetary position.

The main causes of C.V.A. in the Horoscope are ..

• Affliction of the sign Aries by 6th and 8th lord.

• Combustion of Mercury.

• Kroora Shastyansha

• Dominance of Badhkasthan afflicting the Saturn posited in the enemy sign.

CONCLUSION

Medical astrology is a relatively new subject and its practical and applied aspect is not available. Present research work shows that following planetary positions found in 10 Horoscopes of the disease Pakshaghata.

• Affliction of the Lagnesh is found in almost all cases except one case where ‘Lagna’ was well secured by a benefic in the case of Adharangaghata (Paraplegia).

• Affliction of sign Aries and its lord found in almost all cases while paraplegia contained the affliction of Leo & Virgo.

• Affliction of significator of CNS Mercury and Saturn found in all cases. Saturn mainly did the damage supported by Rahu & Ketu.

• In all 10 cases significators of the disease were observed powerful while benefics were weak.

• Manifestation of the disease were observed according to the Dasha lord, its relation with malefics and malefic houses. Same was found with Sub and Sub-Sub lord.

It can be concluded that Ayurveda & Astrology are closely interlinked and both support & help each other.
