Read on to know why!
If you look at the word Holashtak, you would find that it is made up of two words- "Holi and Ashtak". Holi is one of the most popular Hindu festivals and Ashtak means eight (days) in this context. Holashtak are the eight days that lead to the festival of Holi and these eight days are considered inauspicious.
Holashtak begins on Ashtami Tithi (eighth date) of the Shukla Paksha (Waxing Phase of Moon) in the month of Phalgun, as per the Hindu calendar. Holashtak ends on the Purnima (Full Moon Day) of the month of Phalgun which is the day of performing 'Holika Dahan'.
This year Holashtak will begin on 14th March and end on 21st March 2019.

Why are Holashtak considered unlucky for all?
Since thousands of years, the people in the Hindu culture have always refrained from taking part in any major & pious events during the period of Holashtak. This is because many holy texts have mentioned that these 8-days are inauspicious and one must avoid performing all auspicious or significant activities.
These can be:
- Naamkaran (Naming Ceremony) of a child
- Vidyarambh (Start of Education) of a child
- Grah Pravesh or House-Warming (Entry into a new property)
- Buying or Selling a Property or Vehicle
- Start of a new business
People who plan any of the above, make sure that they defer such plans and wait till the period of Holashtak gets over. The reason behind all of this is very simple.
The entire cosmos goes through very subtle yet extremely powerful changes during this time and hence when there is a shift in the energy pattern of the entire cosmos, it is best to sit back and let this incredible phenomenon get over before we foray into something new!
Now, astrology witnesses this phenomenon very clearly in terms of change in planetary effects. All planets which are actually the cosmic bodies that play a defining role in the lives of humans, undergo massive changes on the energy levels during Holashtak.
Since we all live under the powerful influence of planets, it is considered wise to put all major plans on hold while the planets come back to the state of normalcy after experiencing this change of energy.
Strong Astrological phenomenon happening during & around Holashtak 2019
There are certain transitory changes with respect to planets happening during & around Holashtak that will affect everyone in a significant way.
Of course the end result of such changes will vary from person to person depending upon other astrological permutations & combinations as per their own personal natal charts, but let us look at the planetary changes whose effects would amplify simply because of Holashtak.
Transit of Rahu & Ketu into Gemini & Sagittarius respectively!
Rahu or "Dragon's Head" has transitted into the sign of Gemini on 7th March 2019 as per its current movement in the Zodiac Belt and the movement of this "North Node of the Moon" just cannot be ignored!
This is because Rahu is a planet which as per Vedic Astrology, is considered as a naturally malefic planet and is mostly responsible for bringing sudden losses and shocks in the life of an individual.
Post 7th March 2019, Rahu has entered the sign of Gemini where it remains in an exalted state and a malefic planet in an exalted state becomes even stronger and therefore everyone should tread with caution.
Furthermore, this change of sign by Rahu has happened just a week before Holashtak which makes the malefic effects of Rahu even stronger during Holashtak, thereby adding to the unlucky attributes of Holashtak.
Ketu or "Dragon's Tail" being fixed at an 180 degree angle with Rahu will transit in the sign of Sagittarius which happens to be a fiery sign.
Hence this "South Node of Moon" will also bring significant changes in the life of all and its effects during Holashtak must be specially watch out for!
As per Vedic Astrology, Ketu is closely associated with Mars when it comes to volatility in action & accidents. Therefore, the presence of Ketu in a fiery sign like Sagittarius will give rise to sudden & volatile situations and one must exercise caution during Holashtak which is anyways an unfavourable period.
Conjunction of Ketu with Saturn in Sagittarius
Ketu and Saturn are both natural malefics that most of the time are not favourable for a smooth life. Now imagine the result of both these planets conjunct in a fiery sign. Yes, this is what has happened post the transit of Ketu in Sagittarius on 7th March 2019.
Ketu is now conjunct with Saturn which is already present in Sagittarius and will remain there till January 2020.
This malefic conjunction taking place near Holashtak is going to adversely impact the already negative 8-days period.

Mercury Retrograde in Pisces
Mercury is a planet that affects communications and transactions and it being retrograde from March 5 to March 28, 2019 in the watery sign of Pisces is going to promote the chances of loss making transactions and misunderstandings among people.
Fiery Sun going into the Watery Sign of Pisces on 14th March 2019
Right on the first day of Holashtak, Sun which is the king of all planets, will enter into the watery sign of Pisces.
We all know that Pisces is an emotional sign and represents the water element. On top of it, a cosmic fireball in the form of Sun entering into that sign will for sure bring a boil in the emotions of people.
Association of Holashtak with Tantrik Practices
Holashtak is very closely associated with the practice of Tantra and we all know that this practice involve dealing with very intense energies.
So while Holashtak brings a golden opportunity for Tantriks (people involved in Tantrik Practices) to advance in their practices but it also poses a risk to common people of getting harmed by black magic or evil spells.
This is a period where many evil spells are cast and if one has a weak aura then he/she is vulnerable to getting harmed by malefic energies during this time.
Hence, it is advised to avoid performing any major event wherein someone might cast a negative spell and damage the end result of that endeavour as the energies are very intense during this time.
Therefore one must let this phase get over so that everything on the energy plane get settled back into a balanced state.
Therefore, you must take necessary precautions and defer all significant tasks during Holashtak (14th March to 21st March 2019).
