Hessonite comes in several colors. It is considered as gem of Rahu which has cow urine color. In Sanskrit it is termed as Trinvar, Tapomani, Rahu Ratna, Swar Bhanu, Peet Ratna, Gomed and Ratan Gomedak. In Urdu it is known as Jerkunia or Jargun. In Bengali Lohitmani, in Gujarati Gomutrajambu, in Marathi Gomedmani and as Hajaraymani in Arbi language whereas in Burma it is known as Gomok. In China it is termed as Peeci.
It is worn for giving strength to Rahu. Its Hindi name is Gomed. In South India it can be obtained from Travancore, Vijayapattam and Coimbatore. The colour of Indian Hessonite is blackish in colour. There are very few places in India from where the Hessonite of cow urine colour can be obtained but that too is not as good quality wise as that of Burma and Srilanka

It is gem of Zirconium and that is why sometimes termed as Zircon also. The chemical composition of the hessonite stone (garnet) is calcium aluminium silicate (Ca3 Al 2 {SiO4}3). The specific gravity is 3.65 and the refractive index ranges between 1.742 and 1.748.
