Sawan 2023: Start Date of the Auspicious Month, Significance & Puja

Sawan or Shravan is a month as per the Lunar Calendar that holds immense significance among the devotees of Lord Shiva. The holy scriptures say that cosmic energies are highly conducive for spiritual growth and a divine gateway to Lord Shiva’s grace opens up during this period. Devotees dedicate the entire month of Sawan to Puja (worship) rituals that help in propitiating Lord Shiva.

Sawan 2023 is going to be a very special one since this year the month of Sawan or Shravan will go on for 2 months and not 1 month because as per the Hindu calendar system- the Vikram Samvat, we are in the year 2080 which has the provision of an ‘Adhik Maas’. Adhik Maas means an extra month i.e there will be 13 instead of 12 months this year. As a result, this time, the duration of Sawan ‘month’ will be 59 days. Mondays are considered very special for worshipping Lord Shiva and usually there are 4 Mondays in Sawan. But this year owing to the Adhik Maas, Shiva devotees will get 8 Sawan Mondays!

Let us look at more details about Sawan 2023.

When is the holy period of Sawan 2023 starting?

The holy period of Sawan 2023 will start on 4th July and will end on 31st August. This means that Shiva devotees will get almost 2 months to worship their deity during Sawan. It must be noted that there is a key tradition of the ‘Kavad’ pilgrimage in Sawan wherein devotees bring water from distant sacred rivers and offer it to Lord Shiva.

Every year in ‘Baidyanath Dham’ in the state of Jharkhand, a huge cultural fair is organized in the period of Sawan called the ‘Shravani Mela’.

The reason for ‘extended’ Sawan in 2023

The calculation of a year in ‘Vedic Panchang’ is done on the basis of ‘Chandra Varsh’ (Lunar Year) and ‘Saur Varsha’ (Solar Year). The Chandra Varsh has 354 days and the Saur Varsh has 365 days. Both of these have a difference of approximately 11 days and every three years this difference becomes 33 days which becomes the Adhik Mass or the extra month. This is why Sawan 2023 will go on till around 2 months.

It is recommended that a devotee must offer ‘Bel Patra’ (Bilva Leaves), Honey, Milk, Sandalwood Paste etc. to Lord Shiva as puja (worship) rituals performed during Sawan or Shravan help in easily propitiating Lord Shiva.

Furthermore, observing a fast on a Sawan Monday, strengthens the state of the Moon in one’s Kundli or Horoscope and blesses the person with sound health!

The Significance of Puja during Sawan

The Vedas and Puranas have described the significance of Shravan or Sawan in great detail. It was the period of Sawan when Goddess Parvati through extreme austerities got Lord Shiva as Her husband. It is said that Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, God Indra as well as the Ganas of Lord Shiva, descend onto the Earth and stay here during Sawan to worship Lord Shiva.

All sorrows are destroyed by worshipping Lord Shiva in Sawan and a devotee realizes his/her desires. The scriptures say that if one does the ‘Darshan’ of any of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ during Sawan then he/she gets the pious karmic fruits that are equivalent to that of performing an ‘Ashwamegh Yagya’.
