The Durga Saptashati—literally “Seven Hundred Verses”—is a sacred Sanskrit text of 700 mantras spread across 13 chapters of the Markandeya Purana (Chapters 81–93). Composed around 400–600 CE, it is also known as the Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi Path. It celebrates Shakti, the Divine Feminine, as the ultimate power sustaining and protecting the universe.

Vishnu, asleep in cosmic waters, is disturbed by demons Madhu and Kaitabha. Devi manifests from Vishnu’s yogic slumber as Maha Kali, enabling Vishnu to slay the demons.

Meaning: Awakening divine consciousness to destroy ignorance.

  1. Chapters 2–3 – Mahishasura Mardini

The devas create Durga to defeat the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, symbol of brute tamas (darkness). After a fierce battle, she slays him.

Madhyama Charita (Chapters 4–10) – Maha Lakshmi

  1. Chapter 4 – Blessings to Devas

The brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha, embodiments of ego and pride, challenge the Devi. She manifests multiple forms (Kali, Chamunda) and defeats them and their generals, Chanda-Munda, Raktabija.

Meaning: Destruction of arrogance and endless desires. Raktabija’s blood, creating more demons, symbolises recurring negative thoughts—only divine wisdom stops them.

  1. Chapter 9–10 – Restoration of Cosmic Order

Devi restores balance and promises to come whenever dharma is threatened.

Uttama Charita (Chapters 11–13) – Maha Saraswati

  1. Chapter 11 – Praise (Stuti) by Devas

The gods extol the Goddess’s all-pervading power.

  1. Chapter 12 – Boons to Humanity

Devi promises liberation and worldly blessings to those who worship her with devotion.

  1. Chapter 13 – King Suratha & Merchant Samadhi

The story of a king and a merchant who gain wisdom and blessings through Devi’s worship.
