Significance

People celebrate this festival to get blessings of Maa Parvati to have a spouse like Shiva-Parvati. Mostly women celebrate this festival to get a husband like Lord Shiva and if they are already married then they pray for the long life of their husband.

Hitory

According to the legend of Hartalika Teej, Goddess Parvati was incarnated as Goddess Shailaputri. A friend of Goddess Shailaputri took her to the thick forest so that her father would not marry her to Lord Vishnu against her wish. Eventually, Goddess Shailaputri was united with Lord Shiva.

How to Celebrate

Hartalika Teej is seen as a major festival and is celebrated on the third day of the bright half of the North Indian Lunar month of Bhadrapud. The festival involves a three day fast.The focus is on praying to Goddess Parvati. The main areas of celebration Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand. In Rajasthan, an idol of Goddess Parvati is taken out in procession in the streets accompanied by singing, and music.

The Hartalika Teej festival has also spread to parts of Madhya Pradesh where it is celebrated as a minor festival.

Hartalika Teej of the north is not to be confused with Hartalika Teej of Maharashtra which is connected to the festival of Gowri Habba.

Haritalika Vrata (Fast)
(Ladies observe this fast for getting a suitable and attractive husband and for his long life)

Method of Observing Haritalika Vrata

This fast is observed on the Tritiya of bright half of Bhadrapada. If Hasta constellation falls on this tritiya this fast becomes more significant. On this fast ladies are not supposed to eat anything. They even do not have water. In the morning after having bath worship Lord Ganesha and Umamaheshwar, chant bhajans throughout the day and listen Haritalika Vrata Katha. Offer food and money to Brahmin and receive blessings.
