Story of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat

In ancient times, a king named Suketumaan ruled the Bhadravatipuri city. The king got married with great pomp and show. But even after a long time of marriage, when he did not have any children, the king and the queen were often sad about who would perform their last rites after their death and who would perform the tarpan of their ancestors?

The king used to be immersed in this thought the whole day. Then one day the troubled king rode a horse and went towards the forest. After some time he reached the middle of the dense forest. After roaming for a long time, he went to quench his thirst near the pond. There he saw an ashram in which some sages lived. The king drank water and went to the ashram to meet the sages. The sages were reciting the Vedas there.

When the king wanted to know the reason for reciting the Vedas from the sages, the sages told him that today is Putrada Ekadashi. The person who observes fast and worships Lord Vishnu on this day gets a child. Hearing this, the king was very happy and he vowed to observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast at the same time. The king observed the Putrada Ekadashi fast and worshiped the Bal Gopal form of Vishnu and duly worshipped him. He also observed the fast on the day of Dwadashi. Due to the effect of this fast, the queen gave birth to a beautiful child.

According to mythological beliefs, if a person observes the Putrada Ekadashi fast, he gets the son Ratna and after listening to the fast story, he gets salvation.
