Katha of Mohini Ekadashi:

According to the legend, there was once a place named Bhadravati, which was situated near the Saraswati River. King Dhritiman, who was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, ruled this place. He was blessed with five sons, the fifth of whom, named Dhristabuddhi, was indeed a sinner involved in many evil deeds and immoral activities. Seeing all this, King Dhristimana disowned Dhristabuddhi. To survive, he got involved in acts of robbery. As a result, he was driven out of the kingdom. Dhrishtabuddhi started living in a forest. Once when he was wandering in the forest, he reached the ashram of sage Kaundinayya.

It was the time of the Vaishakh month, and sage Koundinayya was taking a bath. Some drops escaped and fell on Dhrishtabuddhi. Due to this, Dhrishtabuddhi attained self-realisation and good sense, and thus he regretted all his immoral acts. He requested the saint to guide him towards the path of liberation from his past sins and bad deeds. For this, the sage asked him to observe the Ekadashi fast, which falls during Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, so that he can get rid of the sins. On the day of Ekadashi, Dhrishtabuddhi observed the

Ekadashi fast with full devotion. Ultimately, all his sins were washed away, and he reached Vishnu Lok.

From that time onwards, it is believed that devotees can attain salvation by observing the fast of Mohini Ekadashi.
