Anang Trayodashi, also known as Anang vrat, is a special vow dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is observed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and some parts of South India on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the Chaitra month. During this vow, devotees worship Rati and Anang for a year to seek blessings for prosperity, health and wealth.
The ritual involves:
- Offering prayers to Lord Shiva.
- Feeding Brahmins.
- Donating money and goods to them.
The vrat is believed to bring prosperity to all who observe it. In North Indian states, Anang Vrat is observed on the trayodashi (thirteenth day) of the Margashirsha month. In 2024, the date for Ananga Trayodashi Vrat in Margashirsha month is December 13th.
The main rituals of this vrat are Shiva Puja and Kamadeva Puja. The story of Anang Trayodasi vrat is mentioned in the Garuda Purana. Observing this vrat is believed to lead to marital happiness and prosperous family relations. The rituals may differ slightly across regions, but the essence remains.
Why Lord Kamdeva is called Anang?
Anang is another name for Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love. The word "Anang" means "without body". According to Hindu mythology, when Kamadeva was destroyed by the flame of Lord Shiva's third eye, his wife Rati prayed to Lord Shiva to revive him. Moved by her plea, Lord Shiva brought Kamadeva back to life and declared that he would always reside in the heart of man. Kamadeva was called Anang because he was believed to be without any body. To commemorate this story, people worship Kamadeva and Rati with different fragrant flowers on this day.
Story of Anang Trayodashi
After Sati died by burning herself at Daksha Prajapati's ceremony, Lord Shiva was shattered. He carried her lifeless body while grieving. To help him come out of his sorrow, Lord Vishnu broke apart Sati's body. Shiva then went into deep meditation.
At the same time, the demon Tarkasur was causing disorder. He had defeated Devraj Indra and wanted to win the Devloka. The gods, terrified and desperate for a solution, turned to Lord Brahma. He told them that only Lord Shiva's son could defeat Tarkasur. However, Shiva was still mourning and was in deep meditation and isolation.
According to Hindu mythology, Kamdev, the god of love, took it upon himself to awaken Lord Shiva from his deep meditation. Despite knowing the risks, Kamdev shot his Kaam Baan at Lord Shiva, breaking his meditation. This act made Shiva extremely furious, and he immediately burnt Kamdeva to ashes with his furious third eye. Although Kamdev's attempt was successful in breaking Shiva's trance, it came at the cost of his own life. After calming down, Shiva learned about Tarkasur's tyranny and realized his mistake.
He promised Devi Rati, Kamdev's wife, that Kamdev was still alive but without a physical form. Shiva told her to wait until Trayodashi. He predicted that Kamdev would be reborn as Praduman. He will be the son of Lord Vishnu's avatar, Krishna.
