The two types of eclipses that occur are Solar Eclipses and Lunar Eclipses.
The phenomenon of Solar eclipse happens when the Moon, during its movement on the orbital path, happens to come between the Earth and the Sun, which thereby casts a shadow on the Sun. The cosmic event of Solar eclipse can only be seen from a certain area. In Vedic Astrology, it is also known as Surya Grahan or Solar Eclipse.
When the Moon casts its shadow on Earth, it blocks various rays from the Sun. The Moon is small in size as compared to the Sun and when it comes in front of the Sun, it is not able to cover it completely. Because of this, the eclipse only happens in some parts of the Earth. And with the movement of Sun and Moon, these areas might not remain the same during the whole eclipse.

Solar eclipses are of 4 types and different types of Solar eclipses are:
Partial Solar Eclipses: When the moon only covers some portion of the Sun, it is known as Partial Solar eclipse.
Annular Solar Eclipses: This phenomenon is considered to happen when the Size of Moon is small as compared to the Sun, so it is not able to fully cover the Sun. That is what’s known as the Annular Solar Eclipse when the outer part of the Sun cannot be completely covered by the Moon’s shadow. This phenomenon is also responsible for the ring of fire that is visible around the Sun.
Total Solar Eclipses: When the moon completely covers the Sun it is known as Total Solar Eclipses. One can only see a total solar eclipse if he is present in the path where the Moon casts its darkest shadow.
Hybrid Solar Eclipses: They are also known as annular-total eclipses and are the rarest type. They happen when an eclipse is switching from total to Annular or vice versa.
The first Solar eclipse of 2020 will happen on the 21st of June. It will also be the only Annual Solar eclipse of 2020. This Solar Eclipse will take place in the Mrigashrisha Nakshatra during Amavasya tithi in Krishna Paksha in the Gemini zodiac sign. Gemini Natives might undergo some changes and might have to face some adverse effects because of this eclipse.
The second and the last Solar eclipse of 2020 will occur on 14th and 15th December 2020 i.e. Monday and Tuesday. According to the Hindu Panchang, this eclipse will happen during the Amavasya tithi in the Jyeshta Hindu Month in Scorpio sign.
A Lunar Eclipse occurs when Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and blocks the rays coming from the Sun, which would have reflected on the moon. It holds a great significance in both Vedic Astrology and Science. In other words, when Moon is posited in between the straight line of the Sun and the Earth, then Lunar Eclipses occur. This is also called Chandra Grahan.
Because of the Lunar Eclipse, the visibility of the Moon from the earth reduces to a minimum. A Lunar Eclipse only happens on a full moon night. This holds great importance in Astrology and is expected to affect one’s astrological conditions.

Lunar eclipses are of 3 types and the different types of Lunar eclipses are:
Partial Lunar Eclipses: When only a partial part of the Moon is covered by the Earth, then it is known as Partial Lunar Eclipse.
Total Lunar Eclipses: When Earth is able to fully cover the Moon, it is known as total Lunar Eclipse. This situation only happens when the Earth, the moon, and then Sun are posited in a straight line and at an angle of 180 degrees.
Penumbral Lunar Eclipses: This is a phenomenon when Moon in its path moves through Earth’s penumbra. It dims the surface of the Moon and creates a fragmented image due to the blocked rays from the Sun.
The 4 Lunar eclipses that are prominent in 2020 are:
First Lunar Eclipse: The date for the first prominent Lunar eclipse of 2020 is 11th and 12th January i.e. Saturday and Sunday As per the Hindu Panchang, this eclipse can be observed during the time of Purnava Nakshatra in Krishna Paksha on the Prathama tithi in the zodiac sign Gemini. In Hindu Vedic Astrology it is considered that the planetary positions, transits, and Nakshatras mentioned in one’s birth chart are capable of identifying a person’s traits, karma, and deeds. The most important Navgrahas include Sun and Moon which are the epitome of life and sustainability.
Rahu and Ketu, which are called the shadow planets overpower Sun and Moon and form the eclipses. Eclipses are usually associated with malefic effects on various astrological signs.
There are various mantras that can be enchanted to reduce the malefic effects of the Grahan or the Eclipse. Some of which are:
“तमोमय महाभीम सोमसूर्यविमर्दन। हेमताराप्रदानेन मम शान्तिप्रदो भव॥१॥”
“विधुन्तुद नमस्तुभ्यं सिंहिकानन्दनाच्युत। दानेनानेन नागस्य रक्ष मां वेधजाद्भयात्॥२॥”
(Surya Grahan Mantra)
"ॐ आदित्याय विदमहे दिवाकराय धीमहि तन्न: सूर्य: प्रचोदयात"
“ॐ क्षीरपुत्राय विद्महे अमृत तत्वाय धीमहि तन्नो चन्द्रः प्रचोदयात्”
