Jagannath Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is one of the grandest and oldest religious celebrations in the world. It is primarily held in Puri, Odisha, in honor of Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Krishna, along with his siblings Balabhadra (Balarama) and Subhadra.
Spiritual Significance of Jagannath Rath Yatra
- The Rath Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s annual journey from his temple to his garden palace (Gundicha Temple). Spiritually, it reflects:
- Krishna’s universal love and accessibility beyond caste, creed, or religion.
- The journey of the soul (Jivatma) towards God (Paramatma), as the Lord steps out to meet his devotees.
- A divine reminder of impermanence, as even the Lord leaves His abode temporarily.
The Yatra also marks the social inclusiveness of devotion, as it is one of the rare occasions when the deities are accessible to all—devotees can touch, see, and even pull their chariots.
Specialty of Jagannath Rath Yatra:
Let us tell you a special thing about Lord Jagannath's chariot that nails are not used to make the chariot, because according to the scriptures, nails or thorns are not used for spiritual work. Doing so is considered inauspicious. The chariot of Lord Balarama and Goddess Subhadra is red in color and the chariot of Lord Jagannath is yellow or red in color.
Legends Associated with Rath Yatra:
- Lord Krishna’s Visit to Vrindavan
According to legends, the Rath Yatra signifies Krishna's return to Vrindavan, symbolically uniting with Radha and the gopis who had been longing for him. His sister Subhadra accompanies him on this divine reunion.
The deities travel to the Gundicha Temple, the home of their aunt, where they stay for nine days before returning on the Bahuda Yatra (Return Yatra). The temple is symbolic of a pure heart, which must be cleansed (like the Gundicha temple is ceremonially cleaned) before the Lord enters.
Key Rituals and Practices
- Snana Purnima (June 11, 2025): The deities are bathed with 108 pots of water, leading to Anasara (a 15-day rest period when the idols are not visible).
- Netrotsav: On the day before Rath Yatra, the eyes of the deities are ceremonially repainted in a ritual known as Netrotsav.
- Rath Yatra (June 27, 2025): Three separate gigantic wooden chariots are constructed:
- Nandighosha for Lord Jagannath (16 wheels)
- Taladhwaja for Lord Balabhadra (14 wheels)
- Darpadalana for Devi Subhadra (12 wheels)
- Devotees pull the chariots from the Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple—a distance of about 3 kilometers.
- Hera Panchami (July 1, 2025): Celebrated on the fifth day of the Yatra, when Maa Lakshmi visits Gundicha Temple, angry at Lord Jagannath for leaving her behind.
- Bahuda Yatra (Return Yatra) – July 5, 2025: The deities return to the main temple.
- Suna Besha (Golden Attire) – July 6, 2025: The deities are adorned with gold ornaments atop their chariots.
