The Scriptures say, there was a demon named Raktabija. The demon had a blessing of reproducing himself from every drop of his blood that fell on the ground. Whenever any God used to kill him, the blood touched the ground and he used to regenerate himself into another Demon. So all the Gods were helpless and were not able to kill Raktibija. In despair, the gods turned into Lord Shiva and in order to kill Raktabija, Goddess Maa Kali appeared. It is believed that she spread her tongue over the battlefield, which prevented the Demon’s blood from touching the ground and thus stopping him to reproduce himself. She is also known as Shyama, Kalika, Dakshina Kalika, Griha Kali, Kalratri, Bhadrakali, etc.
