Hariyali Amavasya, 11 August 2018

As per the Lunar calendar, in the Holy month of Shravana or Sawan, the Amavasya (no Moon day) of the Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of Moon) is celebrated as Hariyali Amavasya. It is considered highly auspicious and devotees all over India throng temples to conduct special Puja and Darshan of their deity. Usually Hariyali Amavasya falls three days before another widely celebrated festival called Hariyali Teej.

This year Hariyali Amavasya will be celebrated on Saturday, 11th August 2018.

On Hariyali Amavasya people worship trees specially the tree of Peepal as this tree is considered to be the abode of Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver) and Shiva (Destroyer). This day also symbolizes environmental protection and planting saplings on this day is believed to fulfill one's wishes.

The choice of saplings is determined as per the type of wishe that one has, such as:

  • Those who wish for wealth should plant Tulsi, Amla, Banana and Bel/Bilva saplings.
  • Those who wish for a child should plant Peepal, Ashvagandha and Gudhal saplings.
  • Those who wish for family harmony and prosperity should plant Neem, Mango and those saplings that give shade to others after they fully grow up as trees.
  • Those who wish for Good luck should plant Coconut, Banayan, Ashok and Arjun saplings.
  • Since Hariyali Amavasya comes in the holy month of Shravana, people worship Lord Shiva as this month has special significance of Shiva worship but alongside worshipping Lord Shiva, devotees worship Lord Krishna as well with full fervour.

Countless devotees visit the "Dwarkadish temple" of Mathura and offer prayers, while Vrindavan's famous "Banke Bihari" temple witnesses a huge crowd of Krishna devotees as well on this day.

Massive donation activities are witnessed on Hariyali Amavasya and special meals are prepared and offered to Brahmins.

Since Amavasya in general is meant for performing certain Pujas (spiritual practices) for the peace of ancestors, many people perform Pujas for their ancestors in order to fulfill their spiritual duties towards them and seek their blessings on Hariyali Amavasya.

Farmers pray to Lord Shiva for abundant rains and an ample harvest that would feed not only their family but society at large.

The celebrations associated with Hariyali Amavasya are not only predominant in Northern regions of India such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh but they are famous in other parts of India as well with different names e.g. In Maharashtra it is known as "Gatari Amavasya", in Andhra Pradesh as "Chukkala Amavasya", in Odisha it is celebrated as "Chitalagi Amavasya" and in Gujarat it is known as "Haryali Amavas" or "Hariyali Amas".

Hariyali Amavasya teaches us the importance of nature and our duties towards preserving a healthy and nourishing ecosystem. A beautiful city of Rajasthan- Udaipur witnesses a unique celebration that includes setting up of an amazing fair which goes on for three days. Numerous stalls are set up that showcase traditional Jewellery craftsmanship, local cuisine and fun rides for children. Interestingly the last day of the fair reserved for only women.

Another significant happening coinciding with Hariyali Amavasya this year is Shanichari Amavasya.

Shanichari Amavasya is a very big occasion when special spiritual practices are performed to please Shani Dev or Saturn God.

Hariyali Amavasya this year is also important as on this day, a partial Solar Eclipse which will be the third and last Solar Eclipse of 2018 will take place. Therefore this day is special from a number of aspects ranging from traditional to astrological.

So, bask into the glory of Hariyali Amavasya by taking a resolve to acknowledge the contribution of Mother Nature in our well being and pledge to live sensibly by safeguarding the ecosystem that we flourish in.
