History of Devutthana Ekadashi
Once Goddess Laxmi asked Lord Vishnu: “O Lord! Your uncertain sleeping and awakening time disrupts the whole world. Sometimes you sleep for years or sometimes you are awake for days and nights. Because of this everything on earth is getting disturbed. It also takes away my relaxation as I don't get any time to relax. So, it will be better that you should sleep timely every year.”
Lord Vishnu smiled and told Maa Laxmi that from now onwards, he will sleep for a period of four months. According to the belief, it is said that the devotees who offer prayers and worship Lord Vishnu with utmost dedication and zeal during the time of Lord Vishnu’s awakening and sleeping are bestowed with the divine blessings of the deity and also Lord Vishnu resides in their houses.

Devutthani Ekadashi 2019 for Marriage
Prabodhini Ekadashi also marks the beginning of the marriage season. The four months period from Shayani Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi is considered inauspicious for marriages or other sacred functions. Therefore, people have to wait until Prabodhini Ekadashi to begin the ceremonies. On Devotthan Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah is also performed. Like a normal marriage, the wedding of Tulsi (plant) and God Shaligram (Lord Vishnu) is also celebrated. The Tulsi plant is also known as Vishnu Priya. So, after awakening from his deep sleep, Lord Vishnu first answers the prayers of natives who worship Harivallabh Tulsi.
According to the legends and Hindu scriptures, couples who do not have a daughter or a girl child must perform the ritual of Tulsi Vivah once in their lifetime to earn the honor of Kanyadaan.
