Historical Importance of Basant Panchami

The importance of the festival has been highlighted well in the ancient scriptures. In Hindi & Sanskrit, it goes by both the names, Vasant Panchami & Basant Panchami. Each scripture mentions it differently, vividly, and yet so similar. It has been said that in the olden days India and Nepal used to commemorate the day with unparalleled fervor while worshipping Lord Vishnu & Lord Kamadeva.

In the Upanishads, Vasant is connected to Maa Saraswati and in various Kavya Grantha, it is referred to as the season of Love. In the Rig Veda, Maa Saraswati has been described as:

Importance of Basant Panchami & Color Yellow

Celebrated as the birthday of Maa Saraswati, the festival marks the onset of the Spring festival. Lord Brahma officiated the festival of harvest & beauty, spring with the birthday of Goddess Saraswati.

Importance of Saraswati Pujan During Basant Panchami

Since ancient times, the day of Basant Panchami has been accredited with the day parents send their kids to school to attain knowledge & wisdom.   • Offer a peacock feather to Maa Saraswati, followed by either yellow rice or kheer.
  • Chant the Saraswati Mantra to appease the goddess for 108 times: ऊँ श्री सरस्वतयै नम:

या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता।
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना॥
या ब्रह्माच्युत शंकरप्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा वन्दिता।
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा॥१॥

Meaning: Goddess of knowledge & voice of wisdom, Maa Saraswati is as holy & pure as the moon high above, or the pearls in the sea. She dresses in white and holds a Veena (musical instrument) in her hands. A white lotus is her consort. She is the one who’s worshipped by Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva alike.
