What is eclipse ?

The shadow of the earth travels at a distance of 6 zodiac signs from Sun and that Purnima when the degrees of Sun and Moon both are equal to that of Earth means when they are in straight line the lunar eclipse takes place. The solar eclipse is visible only from a relatively small part of the Earth, whereas the lunar eclipse can be seen from any part of the Earth at night. The solar eclipse can be seen only for a few minutes from any place due to the shortness of the moons shadow whereas the duration of the lunar eclipse can be few hours. In addition to this, the lunar eclipse can be seen with the naked eye without any special protection device, unlike the solar eclipse, because the brightness of the lunar eclipse is less even than the full moon.

Solar Eclipse

In the language of Physics, when moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth, then for some time the image of Sun hides behind the moon, this phenomenon is known as the solar eclipse. The Earth revolves around the Sun whereas the Moon revolves around the Earth. Sometimes the moon comes in between, the sun and the earth. Then he stops all the light coming to earth from the sun thus resulting in the solar eclipse. This event always happens on the day of Amavasya (new moon). Often the moon hides only a part of the sun and this event is termed as partial solar eclipse. When moon covers the sun completely then it is called total solar-eclipse. The total eclipse can be seen only from a very small area of the earth. Except this specific place from no other places the total solar eclipse can be seen. During the total solar eclipse, it takes two hours for the moon to pass in front of the sun. The moon hides the sun completely for a maximum of seven minutes and during these minutes the sky becomes dark, or rather say that the day is converted into night. The solar eclipse is of three types depending on the size of the sun covered by Moon i.e. the total solar eclipse, the partial solar eclipse and the circular solar eclipse.

1. Total Solar Eclipse

In the language of Physics, when moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon completely takes the Earth into its shadow area then the light of the sun cannot reach the earth, and there is complete darkness in one specific area thus resulting in total solar eclipse.

2. Partial Solar eclipse

In the language of Physics, when moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon completely takes the Earth into its shadow area then the light of the sun cannot reach the earth, and there is complete darkness in one specific area thus resulting in total solar eclipse.

3. Circular Eclipse

In the language of Physics, when moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon completely takes the Earth into its shadow area then the light of the sun cannot reach the earth, and there is complete darkness in one specific area thus resulting in total solar eclipse.

Lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse occurs when the shadow of earth hides moon and it generally happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are located almost in a straight line. Due to this geometrical restriction, the Lunar eclipse can occur only on Purnima i.e full moon night. The type and duration of lunar eclipse is dependent on different positions of the Moon with respect to earth.

  • When entire moon is covered during eclipse then it is the "Sarvagrasa Chandra Grahana".
  • If partially covered, then this Lunar eclipse is known as "Khandagaras Chandra Grahana".
